Today, San Antonio is developing rapidly. New destinations are popping up, the population and the number of jobs are increasing, and new attractions are continuously developed.

However, the charm of San Antonio lies not only in these developments but also in the small-town feel it somehow manages to keep despite these advancements. This is why more and more individuals and families are considering moving to San Antonio. Are you one of them? Here are some things to know about the city before you make up your mind.

Basic Information

San Antonio is a large city. In Texas, it closely follows Houston, which is the largest city in the state. San Antonio is currently home to a 1.3 million-strong population and can be found in Bexar County. This city is renowned not just in Texas but also across the US because of its beautiful natural environment, sustained population and economic growth, and its unique attractions and destinations enjoyed by both residents and visitors.

Weather

Summers in San Antonio are humid and very, very hot. Temperatures can go up to 90 to 100 degrees. However, the city makes up for this by having relatively milder winters than those in northern states. Temperatures in winter stay a good margin above freezing, so you do not need to be swathed in ten layers of blankets in front of a fire in order to survive; a thin jacket will do.

Atmosphere

San Antonio is among the ten largest cities in the US, but it is nowhere near other cities in terms of how busy it is. However, again, these are estimated averages. There are areas with much lower and higher rent, home prices, and cost of commodities.

Employment

The big city of San Antonio is home to many offices, big and small and from various industries. Among those that are showing considerable growth are the tourism, finance, and big tech industries. The city is also looking into boosting prospects for its bioscience, manufacturing, aerospace, and related businesses.

Toyota, Valero Energy Corporation, USAA, and Southwest Research Institute are among the best-known companies in San Antonio.

The unemployment rate is a little over 3% right now, and this is a good improvement in relation to previous years. It has been falling since 2010. Also, since around the mid-2000s, the unemployment rate in San Antonio has been lower than that of the entire US by a noticeable margin.

You can find a wide range of houses and apartments here that are much more reasonably priced than those in downtown.

Suburbs

If you prefer the quiet and relaxing ambience of the suburbs to the fast-paced lifestyle in urban areas, you will be glad to know that San Antonio has quite a number of suburban neighborhoods where you can move.

Helotes is small but still offers a lot of land. There is also a wide variety of homes available, from decades-old properties to new construction homes, which are priced between $200,000 and above $1 million.

Boerne is a nice, idyllic rural town and may be considered nearly urban, given the recent addition of establishments like Starbucks and Home Depot.

You can come to Schertz if you are looking for residential properties priced below $200,000. Apart from the low housing costs, proximity to I-35 and easy access to Austin are major benefits you stand to gain by living here.

Attractions

Texas is incomplete without rodeo. You can join more or less one million people every year during the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo, which has won the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s “Best Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year” award several times.

There are many nature-based recreational facilities and amenities in San Antonio where you can enjoy some sun and sweat it out with some great cardio action. You can spend time in Eisenhower Park, one of San Antonio’s biggest parks, for some relaxation, picnic time, and walking or jogging. There are nevertheless hundreds of acres of green spaces and networks of walking or hiking trails.

You can also check out the San Antonio Missions National Park if you are a history nut. The city has five Spanish mission outposts, and four of those are in this national park. These mission outposts were built as far back as the 17th century and remain standing today as majestic historical structures.

One of the places you might like to frequent once you are in San Antonio is River Walk. And this is not just because this area is a known tourist place but also because there are so many shopping and dining places surrounding it. You can also go for a ride in a water taxi to see the river up close.

Visit the Pearl complex, which was once a brewery and is now seen by residents and tourists as a “culinary and cultural Mecca.” There is a farmer’s market, event venues, the Culinary Institute of America, restaurants and dessert shops, and more in this complex.

Finally, do not forget the Alamo, which played a huge role in the battle between Mexican and Texan soldiers. The Alamo is the fifth Spanish mission outpost in San Antonio. The four others are in the San Antonio Missions National Park.

Schools

San Antonio has 123 and 105 public and private schools, respectively. The US News & World Report’s Best High Schools rankings include 14 of the high schools in this city. Meanwhile, the estimated ratio between students and teachers is 15:1 as of the 2015 count.

Another interesting thing to learn about schools in San Antonio is that many of them offer your kids the chance to learn speaking Spanish even at a young age. Spanish courses are offered in public and private schools alike, and there is bicultural education available too.

Meanwhile, there are 29 colleges and universities to date in this city, including the laudable Texas A&M University–San Antonio and the University of Texas at San Antonio.

People

Like other Texas cities, San Antonio has a large Hispanic population. The difference between the percentages of whites and Hispanics or Latinos is only around 10%. Other races include native Hawaiian, Pacific islanders, American Indian, Asian, and African American.

Also, on average, San Antonio residents are quite young. The average age is around mid-30s for women and early 30s for men. Meanwhile, in terms of gender distribution, women outnumber men by around 30,000.

Food

Texans love food, and residents of San Antonio are very much in love with Texas BBQ and some well done authentic Tex-Mex. There are likewise plenty of innovative and creative new eating places popping up, so there is always something new to explore.

Walkability

The city is widely known and admired for its clean and highly walkable streets, sidewalks, trails, and walkways. Spend a day in San Antonio, and you will notice a lot of families and individuals walking alone or with their kids and pets. This is also a preferred environment of seniors who wish to get some exercise and sunlight without having to walk in cramped spaces.

Biking

San Antonio is as friendly to bikers as it is to walkers. There is plenty of space that you can use for biking, and there is even a bike-sharing program. It is called SWell Cycle and comes with an app. It used to be called Bcycle. Despite the name change, the program maintains San Antonio’s original status as a Bcycle city, which means that annual members get to take advantage of the same benefits of the original program.

Public Transport

Unlike other big cities, San Antonio does not have a metro. However, you can take advantage of 89 bus lines and a street car, which together comprise the bus system VIA Metropolitan. The system is easy to master and very efficient, so you should not have any major issue with it.

Driving Around

No urban city is free from traffic. San Antonio does get congested on certain days and times, but the situation is not as bad as those in Dallas, Atlanta, and New York City, for example. We can say the traffic conditions here are quite average. For perspective, take note that of the 100 most congested roads in the state, only 8 are in San Antonio. That isn’t so bad.

You should easily observe the pattern and figure out when it’s best to drive and adjust your trips accordingly. In general, you want to avoid US 281, IH 401, and IH 35 during rush hour. On average, total car travel time in San Antonio is about 25 minutes.

Crime

As expected from a big city, crime is not exactly negligible in San Antonio. Unfortunately, violent and property crimes are noticeably higher in incidence here than in similar cities. For property crime, the rate in San Antonio can be double those in similar cities.

Over the past few years, crime and offense rates have fluctuated upward and downward, but the city remains largely praised as one of the most livable in the US.

Decluttering Your Home Checklist

So, the time has come for you to rise and shine, leaving the past behind and getting ready to embrace a new beginning. Ahh, isn’t that the beauty of moving?

Okay, before we get too dreamy in here, let’s swallow the bitter part of relocating. 1, 2, 3 … Go! If only decluttering your home checklist was such a short run, huh?

Well, while it might not be the fastest task to accomplish, taking the time to pack up your belongings is, in fact, a fantastic opportunity. There is no better way to get rid of everything which has been left behind in the dusty corners of your wardrobe, the basement, or you name it.

Instead of thinking of decluttering your home as a tedious obligation, why don’t you enjoy the ride? Below, we are sharing some contaminating cute ideas to help you on your quest. (Of course, don’t be shy to thank us later for the gulp of inspiration! Xo-xo).

For starters, let’s discuss the different methods of decluttering.

Where to Start?

The biggest challenge is where to start when a large amount of stuff in your house overwhelms you. Ask yourself this:

Which rooms in your home tend to collect clutter frequently?
Which is the most stressful room or area in your home?
Which space would have the biggest impact if you could declutter it quickly?

Your answers will help you create a strategy for your decluttering process. It's best to start with a space you can declutter quickly, and have a big impact. The ideal choice is the kitchen counters. This will give you a quick win for motivation.

Don't overwhelm yourself by picking the most difficult or challenging space at the beginning. The idea is to work for the bottom up. Starting a project and completing it has a feel good vibe that will propel you forward to the next task.

There're several ways to approach the decluttering process. The top four best methods include:

20-minute method
Weekend plan
Kondo style
One room at a time

20-minute Method

This method makes use of a timer with a 20-minute countdown to tackle tasks in smaller time doses. The upside of this method is you will not burn out in 20 minutes. The downside is you won't be able to declutter a big space in those few minutes.

This method is ideal for smaller more defined spaces such as the kitchen. Here is where you tackle one cabinet or drawer at a time. The 20-minute method may not be perfect for a closet unless you divide it into specific segments - say skirts, trousers, boots and the like.

This option is great if you want to make tangible progress but you're short on time. If you’re planning to move houses in a couple of weeks, this process could come in handy.

Weekend Plan

If you're the jump all in at once kind of person, this method is for you. Furthermore, with enough motivation, and someone to watch over the kids for the weekend, the more tasks you’ll complete. This method doesn't work for everyone as it’s akin to sprinting the marathon.

If you do choose this method, create a concrete plan for the order in which you will declutter the rooms. It's foolhardy to start every room in your house only to run out of time to put everything back in order. This method is ideal if you’re planning to move on short notice, say at the end of the month.

Kondo Style

In Marie Kondo's popular book "The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up", she discusses her approach to decluttering. Her forte is to take out every similar item when you declutter.

For example, if you're cleaning the pantry, you must take out all the items and foodstuffs inside. In other categories, this method can be tiresome as you might not know where every office supply in the house is stored. The main reason why we have so much clutter is that we accumulate so much stuff without realizing it. Blame it on impulse buying.

You’ll most likely end up with forgotten items and duplicates whenever you store your stuff in different places. Consolidating everything in one place to assess what stays and what goes is enlightening and reveals a lot. This part of the process is important as it allows you to select what to keep and what to dispose of.

The Kondo style method lets you know all you own and enables you to be more mindful to avoid accumulating clutter in your home. This is also a clever way to audit your belongings.

One Room at a Time

This method is self-explanatory. You choose a room to start with and go through every room one after the other. If you choose this method, it’s recommended to begin with your bedroom. The idea is that the room where you sleep should be the most relaxing and calming. You'll probably have orderly dreams if you fall asleep in a room where books, clothes or random items are in their rightful place. Such is a serene resting area.

Bathrooms are great to do next. This is because most people don't have much sentimental attachment to bathroom products making it less overwhelming to tackle. In regards to the rest of the house, the size of some rooms and amount of clutter will determine how you will tackle the remaining rooms. Approach such rooms’ one section at a time.

Assuming you have one or two months before moving house, the one room at a time method is perfect as it will give you plenty of time to declutter.

In this article, we’ll discuss in depth how to go about the One Room at a Time Method.

Supplies to Gather for One Room at a Time Method

Before you get started, here are the items you need at a minimum:

Rolls of large heavy-duty garbage bags for household trash.
Two large boxes or bins marked "Keep" and "Donate", for sorting the likely donations. Also, add a “Put Away” box.
A dust mask will come in handy for closets and dealing with many clothes.
Masking tape and sharpie for labeling items.

You can use baskets, bins and cardboard boxes for this task. If you have a family, assign each a bag or box with a specific label.

1. Declutter the Outside of Your House

Before you begin decluttering the interior of your house, first declutter the outside of your home. This will help set the mood for what awaits you inside. Anytime you go home after a hard day's work to find a neatly trimmed hedge, and well-maintained yard, it won't matter how rough your day was.

Lookout for any blooming flowers and discard spent blossoms. Illuminate your home at night by changing any burnt out lightbulbs and install enough security lights. As you enter the house, ensure door knobs, door handles and locks are in tip-top shape. Don't forget to lubricate squeaky hinges.

2. Declutter the Foyer

Once you have decluttered the outside, start at the entrance and work your way through the house room by room. Maybe you don't have a traditional mudroom or foyer, but you definitely have an entryway. No matter its size, the best way to make an entryway more functional is to declutter it regularly. Since this is the welcoming area for your guests, ensure the foyer is spotless.

Start with any console, side table or desk in your entry. Scrutinize each drawer by removing the contents and decide which items to dispose or keep. Go over the top of each desk and make sure you have space for your keys and other important items. When everything is accessible and not overcrowded, it will be easier to leave the house with what you need each morning.

Declutter the hall closet the same way as any other closet. Start with shoes and boots, jackets and finally accessories. The entry also picks up lots of clutter from other rooms. Put items from other rooms in the put away box and back to their rightful space.

3. Declutter Your Bathrooms

Of all the rooms in the house, you should first start by decluttering the bathroom. This is because it's the smallest room in the house and the easiest to clean.

Start with the medicine cabinet. Empty it of every item and discard outdated medication, skincare products, and makeup. Return everything you're keeping back into the cabinet and store the items you use most often at eye level.

Next move to the cabinet drawers. Remove everything and do a quick evaluation of what to keep and what to discard. Return the items you're going to keep back into the drawers, with the items you frequently use in the top drawers.

Move to the shower or tub and clean it out. Spray the shower with a cleaning product to get rid of any stains and molds. If you’re planning on selling the house, you definitely don’t want a potential buyer to see such stains.

Clean the mirror, clean the floor, clean vanity, and most importantly clean the toilet. Remove everything from underneath your bathroom sink and declutter the items therein. Finally, sort every item that doesn’t have a home into the four bags or boxes you have staged for the purpose.

4. Declutter Your Bedrooms

Start by spreading your bed. It makes no sense to start decluttering the bedroom while an unmade bed stares at you. Same as the bathroom, it's not surprising to find the easy stuff are cluttering the bedroom. Clear the space next to the bed, clear off the nightstand, then go underneath the bed and clear whatever items that seem out of place. Most of these items are the easy stuff.

Don't waste time on clothes. Though the closet is in the bedroom, that's a separate zone to deal with next. Fold and put the clothes back in the bureau and round up all the clothes that are on the floor and toss them into laundry baskets.

Sort through photos and décor. Many photos, souvenirs, and frames end up in the bedroom, covering bureaus and nightstands. This makes the room appear more cluttered than decorated. Sort out the items you don't have a strong attachment to and donate them.

Clean the bedroom from top to bottom. Clean the windows and finish by vacuuming and dusting surfaces and blinds.

5. Declutter Your Closet

You probably have more clothes than you can manage, especially if you're a clothes shopaholic. This makes clothes the main source of your closet clutter. The best way to declutter a closet is to first declutter your clothing by type. This means you start with shoes, boots, shirts or blouses, denim, trousers and the like.

The main challenge here is discarding old and outdated stuff. Donate all the clothes that don’t fit and freebies you never wear. Again, start with the easy decisions such as the promotional tees from events and jeans that you outgrew way back in college.

Once you've sorted each type of clothing, you will have four piles to deal with:

Put away any item that was in the wrong place. For example, if you had boxers in the closet, put them in the dresser.
Toss any dirty laundry into the hamper or take it to the laundry room.
Any clothing that needs repair should go to the tailor or the cleaners.
Donations and consignments should go to the donations bag or box.

6. Declutter Your Laundry Room

Having sorted out clothes for laundry, head to the laundry room as it also has a big impact on your family's wealth. The same way the bathroom is filled with ominous water so is the laundry room.

Provide good task lighting
Clean the storage cabinets
Empty the trash can
Clean around the washer and dryer

7. Declutter Your Kitchen

The kitchen is a daily disaster zone. One minute it's spotless, the next counters are choking from all kind of foodstuff and utensils. Because of all the cooking, eating and socializing that takes place here, it can be a challenge to keep it clutter-free. Since it's a daily struggle, it's best to leave this room towards the end.

The kitchen is the storage for all kind of items. You should, therefore, declutter your kitchen by focusing on one category of an item at a time. This includes glassware, cutting boards, utensils, or cutlery. You can also do zonal decluttering of each part of the kitchen.

Empty each space, analyze each item, and return everything back to its rightful space. First identify powerhouse storage areas, upper cabinets, and the pantry. Move onto the drawers, lower cabinets, and the space under the kitchen sink.

For the most part, expired food needs to be thrown away. The exceptions are where there's a difference between "Use By" and "Best By" dates. Other foodstuffs to dispose of include freezer-burned food, expired or unused spices, old oils, stale crackers and snacks, and food you're never going to eat. Such food is better off with someone who will actually use it.

While decluttering the countertops, move as many items as possible off of the countertops and into storage spaces. Keep only what you use on a daily basis on the countertops.

Excess plastic grocery bags can easily build up and when you have more than you will use, they take up unnecessary space. Recycle them at your local grocery store or see if a neighbor can use them.

Finally, take your put away box and return any item that doesn't belong to the kitchen to its rightful storage space in the house.

8. Declutter Your Living Room

The den is the ideal downtime area and gathering place for your family. This room should have a relaxed ambiance. Because of the many activities it hosts, it's one of the hardest rooms to keep neat every day. Living rooms also don’t offer enough storage spaces. You may have a TV console and several bookcases, but they don't hide much.

The key to decluttering the living room is to decide on permanent storage spaces for items you frequently use such as magazines, books, and remote controls.

Start with side tables, consoles, and bookcases. Then move to the coffee table and entertainment unit. Empty them, evaluate the items they store, then return them to the proper storage area. Keep books out of sight, action your mail, fold blankets, prop pillows and the like.

Next move to the electronics. Are you using every electronic item and do they work? Remove any gadget that is not connected to the television or home theater system. Store items such as gaming equipment and chargers where you use them.

Cathedral of Junk – As the name suggests, Cathedral of Junk celebrates what other people have thrown away. Owner Vince Hannemann continues to maintain and modify the Cathedral of Junk. At some point, there was a three-story tower that soon got converted to rooms in the original structure.

Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum – This destination is both an outdoor and an artistic destination. It is adjacent to Zilker Park and features works by Charles Umlauf, an American sculptor. Today, the museum and garden are maintained by volunteers and staff using donations and grants. Where to Party

6th Street – 6th street is a single street but divided into three sections: East 6th, West 6th, and Dirty 6th. East 6th is known for live music venues and even dance lessons, West 6th is home to high-end bars and restaurants, and Dirty 6th is teeming with bars and rowdy partygoers from the college student crowd. You can check out Italic, Key Bar, and Clark’s Oyster Bar in West 6th and Hotel Vegas and The White Horse along East 6th. Burnet Road – This street is in North Central Austin, and the shopping area stretches from North Loop Blvd to 44th. Burnet Road is more than just clothes. There are artisan jewelry, home décor, body care products, gift items, antiques, and many more. Shopping here is also a great way to support and help local businesses flourish.

North Loop – Also in North Central Austin, North Loop is filled with bars and stores selling vintage finds. Examples of bars you can find here are Drink.Well and Work Horse. Meanwhile, some great shopping places to try out are Revival Sunday Market and Room Service Vintage. Between these shops, you can score anything from small items like pendants and pins and huge ones like furniture.

The Domain – If you are a fan of trendy upscale boutiques and stores, you should check out The Domain. It is a huge area where you can find many top-of-the-line stores, but there are also brands like H&M. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars here, so the whole place is very popular among entrepreneurs and yuppies. You also do not have to find parking as you hop from one establishment to another because stores are within walking distance from each other.

With Dallas’ reputation for having a fast growing population and number of jobs available, we are not surprised that you are considering moving to Dallas soon. Indeed, this booming city is sought after by all sorts of individuals and families due to its merits, perks, and everything else in between!

However, moving is never easy, especially if it’s a different state you plan to move to. If you are thinking about moving to Dallas, scroll down for some basics you need to keep in mind. What is daily life like in the Big D? Are the people nice? Are groceries cheap? Are the schools any good?

What is the DFW metroplex?

For example, sometimes websites give you vague indexes and other figures that your college maths never quite prepared you for.

This is why we thought about tackling this question a little more realistically. To set some perspective, a cup of coffee in Dallas should set you back around $5. Add $2 to $3 to that and you can afford a typical fast food meal. However, if you want to upgrade to a decent sit-down lunch, you have to double that new total at least, or prepare at least $40 if you are taking someone out. Cocktails cost around $10 on average in downtown bars.

Meanwhile, utility costs for a one-person household should amount to about $100 per month. Rent ranges from $1,200 to $1,600 on average. While the first set of amounts we gave appear fairly reasonable, housing costs are a little more than the average for the entire US. Whether that is reasonable or not depends on how much you value the benefits of living in Dallas: the environment, accessibility, facilities, employment opportunities, etc.

Anything to know about taxes?

In Texas, residents do not pay state and income taxes. Sounds good, right? However, as expected, there is a catch. Property and sales taxes in this state are noticeably higher than in other states. This is not surprising at all. Any state would need a source of funds for local projects!

This is something to keep in mind if you are purchasing a residential property in Dallas. Right now, Texas residents pay real estate taxes amounting to more or less $3,400. For perspective, the average amount across the US is just a little over $2,000. That reflects a discrepancy of about 59%, which is a big deal especially if you are an ordinary working class individual.

What is the job market like?

Dallas has a booming job market and high salaries. One reason for this is that Dallas and its neighboring areas are home to many top corporations, and many of them have their corporate headquarters in the Big D. These companies include AT&T, Southwest Airlines, JCPenney, Fossil, ExxonMobil, Kronos, Baylor Healthcare System, and more.

The city is also known for being a favorable environment for businesses. In fact, Forbes magazine once hailed Dallas as one of the “best places for business and careers.” There is also quite a wide range of industries. Regardless of your field and whether you prefer to work in an office or out on the field, you should find yourself happy and quite content in Dallas.

How much do houses cost?

Real estate or housing costs in Dallas are increasing. Currently, residential properties in the DFW area have a median value of approximately $228,000. This may not seem too alarming right now, but real estate consultants and experts believe that costs will continue to increase well into next year. The expected increase is around 6%

The rent is not so manageable either. As we mentioned earlier, housing rent in Dallas can be anywhere from $1,200 to $1,600. These amounts are relatively higher than their counterparts in other Texas cities, such as Austin and Houston, but still a lot lower than prices in cities like New York and Boston, where rent can start at around $2,000.

What are good neighborhoods in Dallas?

You have to choose your neighborhood carefully. With the sheer size of the city, you can’t just expect everything to be within a short drive away from everything else. Moreover, the different areas or small regions comprising Dallas can differ a lot in terms of profile and atmosphere. You definitely want to live where you fit in. Here, we attempt to profile some known residential areas in the city.

Let’s begin with East Dallas. This area is popular among nature and outdoor lovers because of the wide variety of recreational activities you can do here. The subdivisions in East Dallas are near a lake called White Rock, where residents and visitors often go for swimming, picnics, kayaking, and paddle boarding. The housing costs here are also relatively lower than in other Dallas areas. Hence, we recommend you move here if you are into nature and saving money!

Central Dallas is in stark contrast to East Dallas. Filled with dining and shopping establishments, nightlife favorites, D-link buses (free public transport), and many other interesting destinations and useful amenities, Central Dallas neighborhoods are ideal if you want to be in the center not just geographically but also figuratively.

In West Dallas, you get to take advantage of easy access to Fort Worth and Arlington through I-30.
